Technology

College Prep mindfully integrates technology to support innovative teaching and learning in and beyond the classroom.
Instruction in the effective, ethical, and appropriate uses of technology begins with a ninth grade tech orientation and is revisited often. Technology resources that enhance learning include more than a dozen online research databases, the 1:1 laptop program, fabrication software and hardware in the xLab maker space, a suite of computer science classes, and a Technology Office staffed by faculty who plan thoughtful and innovative ways of supporting students and teachers.

laptop program

All students receive identical MacBook Pro computers with common software as part of College Prep’s 1:1 laptop program. This standard set of software and hardware facilitates communication, enables collaboration in and beyond the classroom, offers school-provided technical support, and ensures technology equity for all students. xlab makerspace

In the xLab, students learn about design, robotics, electronics, and modeling through iterative creation. The xLab’s suite of tools are available for class projects related to curriculum, as well as club projects.

Examples of xLab projects include:
  • A science class used heat sensitive 3D printed pieces to demonstrate the effects of rising ocean temperatures on coral reefs.
  • Nexus, our art and design class, investigates the intersection of art, design, and technology by using 3D printers, sewing machines, and the laser cutter.
  • English seminar students build creative project, like bookmaking, shadow boxes, or models.
  • The Maker’s Club, a student led group that trains students on how to use tools and lead projects that benefit the school community such as how-to guides, tutorials, workshops, screencasts, and testing new systems
  • Electronics, Engineering, and Design class tests light- and motion-activated model train crossing systems
  • Students build drones, creating jewelry using the laser cutter and 3D printers, or leading workshops on 3D modeling software
