Founded in 1960 by Mary Harley Jenks and Ruth Willis, The College Preparatory School is an independent day school for grades 9–12 in Oakland, California. For over 65 years, College Prep has fostered a vibrant community of learners who engage deeply with big ideas and the craft of scholarship within a joyful, caring environment.

Nos étudiants

Our student body reflects a wide range of racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, along with diverse interests and talents. For the 2025-26 school year, College Prep's enrollment is 370 students (approximately 92 per grade); 71% self-identify as students of color. The average academic class size is 14 students. Most students enter in ninth grade, though we welcome a small number of new sophomore and junior transfers most years.

College Prep faculty are deeply committed to students’ intellectual and personal growth. Known for both subject expertise and exceptional teaching, 86% of our faculty hold advanced degrees. Teachers here cultivate close, collaborative relationships with students that support deep engagement in learning.

TESTING & RECOGNITION

While test scores are only one way to measure student success, they help tell a meaningful story:
  • Class of 2025 average SAT scores: 740 (evidence-based reading and writing), 722 (math)
  • Class of 2025 average ACT Composite: 33
  • Class of 2025 National Merit Recognition: 40% (compared to ~5% nationwide)
  • Class of 2025: 16 National Merit Finalists
College Prep has been recognized as one of the top five independent schools in the nation by Forbes, The Wall Street Journal, and Niche.com among others.


Students join us from nearly 110 schools: independent (73%), public (21%), parochial (6%).

Our campus is a short walk or shuttle ride from Rockridge BART, drawing students from across the Bay Area.

Tucked into a small, verdant valley in Oakland’s Rockridge neighborhood, College Prep’s 5-acre campus blends seamlessly with the native landscape. The campus includes thoughtfully designed buildings that support both academic and community life.
